Weekly StandUp #3/4: What Happened at OpenCorporates

This post is the part of a weekly blogpost series updating you on what’s going on at OpenCorporates this week. Want to help us get more data? Claim a mission!

Where were we last week? Sorry about not giving you an update last week but our community manager was under the weather so now you get two updates in one!

Data the OpenCorporates team is scraping…. from the Data team (Peter & Shyam)
Business licenses. Business licenses are interesting because they contain information about business activities and may have information like trading names and addresses. In the past two weeks, we scraped business licenses from a staggering amount of of states including New York, Arizona, Georgia, Pennsylvania, Massachusetts, Texas, Iowa, Illinois, Hawaii, Tennessee, Ohio, Delaware, Kansas, New Jersey, Minnesota, Mississippi. We also extracted some data from the Myanmar registry for Global Witness.

Bots submitted by community members…. from Peter Evans.
dinotash has submitted a neat Financial Licenses scraper for the National Securities Commission of Romania and Nigeria, while Darius & Lorenz fixed the problem with his bot and it’s now running!

noun_1198Star scraper of the week: You won’t believe it but it’s dinotash again as he has worked on lots of new and difficult bots!

Do you want to join the fun and claim an Open Data mission? Here’s what Peter suggests.
MEDIUM : Write a bot for Finance Licences (securities) – Israel Securities Authority (isa)’
MEDIUM : Write a bot for Finance Licences (securities) – Securities And Exchange Commission (thailand)’
HARD : Write a bot for financial licenses (banking) for Sudan (still unclaimed!)

Campaign & Community Update – #MaptheBanks … from Hera & Seb.
We are hosting a #FlashHacks event in Berlin (24th March) and Madrid (18th March) this month to scrap more financial licenses for Map the Banks. If you’ve got friends there, why not invite them?

Our Slack experiment is also going really well so if you want to be part of our community and get live feedback on bots, data sources or just complain about PDFs – request an invite by emailing hera@opencorporates.com

Events we are attending & speaking at….

  • level39 is having their 3rd year birthday. So we’ll be attending that!

Know of any event we should be going to?

The next #FlashHacks is…
London, 17th March, 5-10pm >> Join Us!
Madrid, 17th March, 5-9.45pm >> Join Us!
Want to host your own #FlashHacks? Get in touch hera@opencorporates.com .

What else?

  • We’ve got a new hire who will be joining us soon! It’s hush for now but we’ll introduce you to him next week.
  • Hera (me!) wrote her first scraper thanks to Peter!
  • Seb made his own bombay mix, from scratch (yes, that includes frying lentils and stuff).
  • Shyam tried a new recipe with banana flower power which according to him “was a disaster… need to check with my grandmom on what’s the right recipe.”
