10 reasons to work for OpenCorporates

OpenCorporates is hiring! Although we are a small team, we are growing fast. We were joined by 13 new team members in 2019, and we aim to recruit a further 10 in technology, data and corporate roles in 2020. If you have skills in these areas, and want to benefit society by making company data more transparent, we would welcome an application from you.

We think there is nowhere better to work than OpenCorporates. But in case you think we are biased, here is why you should come and work with us:

1. Public-benefit mission

We have a clear mission – we want to become the world’s foundational company data source, to make global corporate transparency mainstream and to provide company data the world cannot live without. In doing so, are introducing new levels of trust and transparency to the corporate world. Our ‘White Box’ data model allows investigators to expose money laundering and other illicit uses of companies more easily than was possible in the old world of closed, proprietary ‘Black Box’ data.

2. OpenCorporates Trust

Our public-benefit mission is safeguarded by the OpenCorporates Trust. This ensures that we will never be sold, nor diverted from the mission to make company data more widely available for the public good. So if you work for us we can guarantee that your skills and expertise will contribute to improving transparency in global business.

3. We are the future of data

More and more companies are moving away from using closed, proprietary Black Box data to instead using provenanced and well-defined White Box data like ours to transform the way they conduct onboarding, Know Your Customer verification and data aggregation. We have a team of bright people who are passionate and have strong values, and who are trying to solve ambitious tech and data challenges.

4. Flexible working

We offer flexible hours and working-from-home days, and we have a cool, high-spec office in a vibrant part of London near Shoreditch. There are lots of quirky, independent places to eat and shop.

5. Learning budget

Every member of the team has their own learning budget and learning days where they are encouraged to focus on career development.

6. Values

We are a values-based organisation, which allows every team member to be productive and work autonomously in support of our values, which are:

  • One team spirit
  • Beat the odds; change the world for the better
  • Collaborate, learn and grow
  • Act fearlessly with pride and passion

All team members are empowered to make decisions in alignment with these values.

7. Collaboration

We work in a very collaborative way, and not in silos, so every team member can have a real impact across the business. We hold regular feedback sessions, monthly surveys, roundtable discussions and business updates so everyone knows what is going on and feels part of the team. Your voice really will be heard here.

8. Culture

We are always thinking of new ways to improve our culture. All our team members have recently been interviewed by an independent HR consultant about how we could make our environment even better, and we will start new initiatives in 2020 based on their findings. We are proud that half of the OpenCorporates leadership team is female, and we are actively working to further increase diversity across the whole team.

9. Team-building

We do a lot of team-building exercises. About half of our team take part in our weekly running club which runs along the beautiful Regent’s Canal over lunch. But this isn’t forced on people and it’s not all about exercise – we also held a recent Christmas event where we spent the afternoon learning how to do axe-throwing, then went for dinner, drinks and dancing. We care about people’s wellbeing and make time for initiatives that benefit the team.

10. Sustainable business model

We have a sustainable business model and we are growing at a rapid rate. We have big commercial ambitions and we are disrupting the way corporate data is made available for public benefit.
