New jurisdiction: Belarus (1.3 million companies)

Belarus is our latest addition to OpenCorporates’ database of companies, making it jurisdiction #122. We’ve added 1.3 million companies of which around 320,000 are registered companies, and just under 1 million sole-trader / entrepreneur (Предприниматель) registrations, many of which are historical records.

The data is sourced from the Unified State Register of Legal Entities and Individual Entrepreneurs (Единого государственного регистра юридических лиц и индивидуальных предпринимателе), published by the Ministry of Justice.

Data attributes

Some details of the fields available in OpenCorporates in this dataset:

  • Company Number
  • Company Name
  • Alternative Name – Trading Names
  • Incorporation Date
  • Dissolution Date
  • Current Status
  • Company Type – enables identification of entrepreneur records only
  • Retrieved Date

Additional notes about the data

  • Sole trader / entrepreneur records – There are almost 1 million Individual Entrepreneurs in the register. Given that the population of Belarus is 9.5 million, this is a significant number. Sole traders are required to register and de-register when they cease trading. When they start trading again, they are assigned a new registration date and number. There is no information in the source to make it possible to distinguish between individuals listed, e.g. by date of birth, tax identifiers, address, etc. By having all records in OpenCorporates, this results in apparent duplicate names in the data set. This could indicate either that the same individual has re-registered, or that a sole-trader shares a common family name with another. The majority of the entries have a registration end-date in the past (mapped to dissolution date), with a split of roughly 70% inactive / 30% active, i.e. around 300,000 active traders
  • Current Status – is based on the English translated status, plus original Belarusian.
